Saturday Night Outfit!!

I went out yesterday night to celebrate my friend Kaitlyns birthday!! (love her, happy birthday!) It was such a fun night ~ We had dinner at Yard House and walked around Santana Row. There was even a fashion show going on, (I watched parts of it!) So exciting haha

Ask Ally: Guy Advice!

Dear A,
I had a crush on this guy for 3 years and his my best friend.
Its so hurt to know that he likes a other girl and I couldn’t even have a strength to tell him my feelings .

Hi lovely fan!

First off, thanks for your submission! I was excited to see them come so soon~ Now for advice… Relating to personal experience, I’ve had too many occasions where guys I’ve liked haven’t liked me back in return. The situation gets even trickier when it’s someone you know well and/or have been friends with for a long time! (The last time I liked a best friend was back in middle school, so it’s been a while for that kind of situation.)

First I would ask myself if not telling this person my feelings would be something I regret later on. I think this depends on the person, as some people tend to feel better getting their feelings out, whereas some would rather keep it to themselves. Play the scenarios out in your mind, not necessarily with the end result in mind, but instead with the relationship. Would this strengthen or weaken your relationship with him? Would this make you feel more at ease? Ask yourself these questions and think it over before you decide to tell him or to just keep a secret.

Second, I have some advice for pursuing a guy, even if he likes someone else.

1. Understand how he sees you and work to the best of that.

2. If you’ve known this guy for a long time, you might have to change up some things in the way you act or in your appearance to get his attention. Don’t do anything crazy, but you can always switch up the way you greet him, or how you do your hair the days you see him.

3. Don’t be afraid to make the first move! I know a lot of us have the idea in mind that guys should make the first move. This shouldn’t apply to every single case. It’s also great that you’re best friends with this guy, because you can ask him to spend time with you in a natural way, without him feeling weird about it! (advantages! 😉

4. Make the most out of the time you guys do spend together. Do things that make him feel natural and happy with you. Food is also a great way to get through to a guys heart. (If you can cook.)

5. Realize that nothing in interpersonal relationships are final! Even if he doesn’t like you today, he could very well be in love with you tomorrow! You have a world of possibilities if you approach the situation the right way.

And now, some advice for getting over a guy. (If you no longer want to pursue him, and just want to move on.)

1. Again, realize that nothing in interpersonal relationships are final! This is so key for me in terms of moving on. Just because it’s over doesn’t mean that door is closed forever. Who knows where anything will be in one, two, or ten years in the future! Thinking about it from this perspective allows me to move on without feeling heartbroken.

2. Focus on yourself and personal power. Although love is crucial, there’s a lot more outside of that pink heart fence! Ask yourself how you can become a better person, inside and out. I can be a very spiteful person at times, so sometimes my motivation for dieting or studying is “those guys you liked will be begging for you sooner or later!”

3. Get the emotions out. Sometimes they’re ugly, but I always feel better about myself after just throwing out a few rants, in forms of writing, art, doodles, whatever. Find an emotional outlet and punch away at it.

New advice column for readers!!

Hi guys!! Oh no, it’s almost 3 AM! Sick girl can’t sleep 🙁
When I can’t sleep I tend to think a lot about completely irrelevant things like 9th grade boy crushes, what kind of breakfasts I ate in Japan, and crap like that.

A few hours earlier, I was thinking back on a site I made during the 6th grade, and it made me think to the advice section I put on there! (By the way, I was a really cool kid back then…) If you want to be entertained and revisit middle school shenanigans… visit (http://www.freewebs.com/ally1on/) not even going to link to it because I’d rather not have everyone quote me.

Anyway, thinking back to that made me remember how much fun I had talking to people and trying to help them solve problems in their lives! I don’t tell many people about my emotional journey and many dark secrets about myself, but I would credit myself as one (albeit young) who’s experienced quite a lot in life already! I want to share my mistakes and growth from these personal experiences with others in the form of advice! I love to give family and friends advice, so I thought I would implement an advice column type thing into my blog and give it a test. On my contact page (you can get there by clicking the “Contact” icon on my tab bar on the top of the blog!) I added a section called “Ask Ally” and added a form under there as well!

My Labor Day Weekend! (Art art art !!)

Hi lovely readers!
As some of you might know, I was sick this weekend… (basically all weekend.) It was also a really busy weekend for me in addition to that, so I didn’t have any time to hang out with friends or go anywhere fun.
One of my classes this year is AP Studio Art!! I love my art class at school because my art teacher is so rad, and our class is like a big happy family. I also love that for one period a day I get to just relax and laugh and release some of the stress from all that math x___x

So anyway, my portfolio review is this Wednesday!! I’m missing pieces, so I had to do some last minute cramming this weekend in addition to trying to get better. I spent all my time sitting on the sofa in the living room, eating Klondike ice cream bars, and painting!

So these are the four pieces I was working on over the weekend! The one on the furthest left and furthest right are ones I started blank canvas this weekend. The vertical one and the pink one were started earlier but I brushed up on them these couple of days. So now I’m going to go more in depth for each of these pictures and give a conceptual explanation for each! Keep on reading if you’re interested in the thought process behind these paintings!

My dad says he senses a sort of surreal feeling from this painting, which I was originally going for. (Along the way of visualizing and actually painting it, I kind of forgot about the original surreal intent I had for it, but I guess it came through anyway in the end!) For me, there’s a concept and a story behind this. If I had to explain the concept of this painting, I would say it’s being enraptured in a culture different from my own. In this painting, the cultures are Japanese (the screen doors, tatami style room, koi pond) and Chinese (my child self, the blanket.) However, in a less obvious sense, these cultures also represent my current cultures, American and Chinese. I had a lot of fun playing around with the strict, straight lines of the room, and then the flowing forms of the blanket and pond.

The story behind this is related to memories of my childhood, and stories about creatures my aunt would tell me before naptime! I wrote a memory piece on this memory at CSSSA 2013 Summer camp as well (for creative writing) so if anyone’s interested, I’ll post that.

When I have more time, I’m definitely going to go in and fix parts of the dog, and add more detail into the pond and garden. (I’m sick of looking at this picture for now though, this was the one I was mainly working on today!) I spent a lot more time on this painting than on the one below, and I think that easily shows through the more solid colors and details. The medium used is acrylic on canvas.

I think the concept for this one is very clear, however, the execution of this painting was super rough and I did it in a couple of hours. (You can basically tell that from the painting…) The concept incorporates both my love for Shanghai and it’s history and evolution in this past century. The women in the front are from Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s. The skyline in the middle of the view of the Pudong district in Shanghai. Then I just put some random blue dragon pattern on the sides. #china

As you can see, the painting at this stage is more of a base than a completed picture. I’ll definitely be adding more to this if I have the time. The medium used is acrylic on canvas, but I used the acrylic more like watercolor….I think you can also see that in the texture of the paint.

I actually started this piece in the middle years ago, which I find really really funny. I remember posting a rough outline of it on my blog actually! So I went back through my archives and dug up the post for your entertainment. http://www.allygong.com/?p=196

So as you can see, this painting has gone a short way in a long time haha. The concept of this one is much darker than most of my other paintings. I think I started this one while I was heartbroken over something, and I think it’s quite an accurate portrayal of teenage angst and a feeling of being encaged (by roses??). Tell me what you all think 🙂

This painting was just me playing around with colors and flowers! I really wanted to try a sort of techno, weird vibes kind of painting with fun colors and designs. This one is obviously in progress and I’m still playing around a bit with the composition. Also not sure at this point where the background is going. This is more of an observation piece, so there isn’t really concept behind it. However, I will try to flesh out the details more, so it becomes more obvious that the girl is entirely constructed of natural parts (twig eyebrows, flower body, grass hair, tulip face.) Still a lot of work to go! I almost regret using oil paints for this one, I feel like it would have been better in acrylic? Not too sure. The japanese reads “Hana no ko” which means Flower child. The blobs in the background are a creation I like to call “snowflake flower bops.” Still not sure where those are going. The purple dotted thing running through them is actually stars idk. Comments or suggestions on where this one could go would be appreciated!!

Thanks for reading this long ass post!! If you guys like my paintings/art, I’ll try to post more in the future! However, I am not much of an artist and don’t draw a lot outside of when I have to. I find painting especially time consuming, but over weekends and breaks I’m pushing myself to get out there and put more ideas out in color!
