Oh my god, this movie is SERIOUSLY amazing. It’s my favorite animated movie.
I watched this awhile ago, but I wanted to make a post on three possible ways the ending could be analyzed.
Before I start, let me just give you the basics.
“A teenage girl finds that she has the ability to leap through time. With her newfound power, she tries to use it to her advantage, but soon finds that tampering with time can lead to some rather discomforting results.”
-IMDB (was too lazy to type up my own summary.)
Okay so the girls name is Makoto, her two best friends are Chiaki and Kousuke.
Now this part is to those of you who’ve watched the movie…..
How did you interpret the ending? For me, I came up with three possible endings.
DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE MOVIE.

Okay here goes.
Scenario Number ONE:
Makoto is Auntie witch, and Chiaki travels through time conning people to help him protect the painting.
Evidence that this could be true: Aunt says “he told me to wait”, “he never came back”, and knows a lot about time traveling. She also is in charge of restoring the painting and has deep emotion toward the painting. She kind of resembles Makoto as well. This is actually a pretty sadistic ending, if its how its meant to be interpreted.
Scenario Number TWO: Makoto will really end up meeting Chiaki in the future. Maybe Chiaki’s real time is not too far from the current era.
(I really hope this is how the ending was meant to be interpreted, because this is the scenario i like the best!)
Scenario Number THREE: “See you. I’ll wait for you in the future” is just a goodbye, and doesn’t really hold any promise. It’s kind of like a farewell, see you later between friends, who might not ever end up seeing each other again. This is my least favorite ending scenario, UNREQUITED LOVEE T^T
Well, it’s an amazing movie!
Had me depressed for weeks….
