I always find myself amazed at how different one can feel when wearing different types of clothing. I received this mink-fur shawl as a present during a dinner party in Shanghai last summer. There were little bursts of rain throughout summer, so I would bring this beautiful shawl with me to protect myself against the temperamental weather. I fell in love with the girl I became when wearing this in Shanghai; whether it was while strolling through downtown districts at night, or singing hours of karaoke with my cousins, I found a certain elation while draped in this rich, chocolate wool. I would always feel like a glamorous actress of the fifties when wearing this out, as if every corner held an awaiting surprising to be greeted by a lipstick traced smile.
Digging through my closet recently, my fingers felt the texture of this shawl which had been in post-summer retirement. It was like re-opening a box of memories. Immediately, Shanghai nights and laughter flashed through my mind and brought a smile to my face. I put on one of my favorite dresses, and draped this around my shoulders to make the outfit more suitable for the autumn. For a finishing touch, I pulled on a pair of sheer black tights with a lovely floral pattern. Without fail, I again felt a touch of excitement in everything I did while wearing this outfit- even if it was just picking up peppermint mochas for my sister and I before taking a walk under pretty trees. I hate cold weather, but I always love to see leaves turn golden and quietly blanket the floor.
